Winners of Glasgow Community Champions Awards 2009 (East Centre & Carlton) Print E-mail

This fantastic achievement is testament to the hard work of all the volunteers and others who continuously donate their time. The support of the local community has also been instrumental. Thank you for all your support and keep it up.

The Glasgow Community Champion Awards is a partnership between Glasgow City Council, Strathclyde Police, Strathclyde Fire & Rescue, Glasgow Community Planning Partnership and the Evening Times.

The award is in recognition of a few of the people who are already making that extra bit of difference and community activists committed to improving lives.

The event was held at St Andrew's in the Square on Tuesday, April 28 2009 and it was a magnificent evening.

Of 140+ nominations (the highest number of nominations in the Awards so far) in the East Centre and Carlton area,( Bridgeton, Dennistoun, Calton, Riddrie, Carntyne, Haghill, Parkhead, Dalmarnock and Cranhill), Cranhill Community Project came in 1st in the Team Award and Marie Ward (Manager) was named runner up in the Public Service Individual Award.

Councillor Frank Docherty welcomed the bumper entry field saying: "The East End is full of those untold stories of great heroism and people giving their lives to help other people."

Donald Martin, editor-in-chief of The Herald & Times group, said: "Readers from across the city have responded in extraordinary number to tell us about the unsung heroes transforming lives in their neighbourhood.

"We have been overwhelmed by the way in which people from the East End have taken the Glasgow Community Champion Awards to their hearts.
